NOMEX®
NOMEX® is a synthetic aromatic polyamide polymer (aramid) which is characterised by a particularly stable molecular structure.
This results in the excellent dielectric, thermal, chemical and mechanical properties of NOMEX® and opens up a wide range of applications for NOMEX® products.
As surface insulating materials, NOMEX® papers and pressboards have been used for more than 35 years in transformers, motors, generators and other electrical equipment, proving their overload capacity and high reliability even under extreme operating conditions.
NOMEX® paper is made from two forms of aramid polymer, the fibrids (as binding particles) and the flakes in a papermaking process (type 411). In a second step, a high temperature calendering process is used to achieve high densification and cross-linking of the NOMEX® papers (types 410, 414, E56, 418).
Thermal stability
Nomex is UL-approved (file number: E34739) for use in electrical machines at continuous operating temperatures of up to 220 °C, whereby the properties remain almost unchanged even in continuous operation (UL 546 B).
Short-term (over hours) operation of machines insulated with Nomex is also possible at significantly higher temperatures.
Flame retardant, self-extinguishing
NOMEX® aramid paper products do not melt and with a LOI (Limited Oxygen Index) value of over 20.8 at 220 °C (the critical value for combustion in normal air) they do not support combustion (UL 94 V-O).
High mechanical stability (tensile strength, stiffness, tear and tear propagation resistance, bending stability).
Inherent dielectric strength: Nomex allows short term stresses from 18 to 40 kV/mm, possible without further treatment with varnishes or resins
Chemical resistance: NOMEX® is exceptionally resistant to acids and alkalis and is compatible with all types of paints, adhesives, transformer fluids, lubricating oils and coolants.
Low temperature properties: Due to its unique polymer structure, NOMEX® is used in a wide range of low temperature applications.
Aramid paper insulation tubes
We wind tubes from Nomex® 410 which can then be used to insulate bolts or connections.
These insulating tubes can be manufactured in a wide range of diameters.
